Project Launch
Prime Minister at Project Launch, A Gauci
The Project was launched on the 26th March 2007 with a high profile reception at the Red Tower in Mellieha, Northern Malta.
Prior to the reception, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi together with Environment Minister George Pullicino, Project Partners and other dignitaries visited the project site at Rdum tal-Madonna (L’Ahrax point) to learn about the conservation work that will improve this Special Protection Area (SPA).
During the reception, presentations were given by Project Manger Helen Raine and John J Borg of Heritage Malta. The Prime Minister also gave a speech of support in which he praised the initiative and made clear how pleased he was that government departments were involved.
BirdLife Malta President Joseph Mangion said: “The Yelkouan Shearwater Project is an excellent example of partnership between the government, non governmental organisations and the private sector. We thank the Maltese government for their support as well as all the project partners and the co-funders MEPA and HSBC. This important project will ensure that Rdum tal-Madonna is protected for these birds, Maltese people and tourists to enjoy.”
