Scientific data gathered by the EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater project in Malta over the last month has highlighted the importance of the Aegean Sea for young Maltese Yelkouan Shearwater, a globally threatened migratory seabird which appears to spend a significant amount of time in Greek waters in the months immediately after fledging at the Rdum tal-Madonna cliffs.

Yelkouan Shearwaters tagged with tracking devices return

The EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project announced the return of the first pair of adult birds that were tagged by tracking devices during migration by the project researchers last year. The Project has also succeeded in obtaining unique images of Yelkouan Shearwaters returning to their burrows using a hidden infrared camera.

EU Life Project tracks Maltese Yelkouan Shearwater to Greece

During a press conference held at St James Cavalier today, the EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project presented the initial findings of the telemetry work that has been carried out over the last six months and revealed that to date, one of the Yelkouan Shearwater chicks which was fitted with a satellite tag has travelled as far as Greece and another to the coast of Egypt.
